You’re headed to Banff, one of the most spectacular mountain towns in the world, but you only have a few days to suss out its best attractions. From whitewater rafting to rock climbing, there’s so much to see and do. Here’s a few suggestions on how to have the perfect 24-hours in this epic outdoor playground.
Take a View
The perfect starting point to get your Rocky Mountain high on is found at Sulphur Mountain. Take the Gondola up to the summit or hike this short, yet strenuous trail for spectacular views of six Rocky Mountain ranges. At the top, saunter along the boardwalk and say hello to the local wildlife including bighorn sheep and adorable marmots. Afterwards, you could take a dip in Banff Upper Hot Springs, located at the base of Sulphur Mountain, but we recommend you save your soak for later in the day. ~Photo Credit: Banff Lake Louise Tourism / Paul Zizka Photography
Window Shopping
Like many resort towns, Banff boasts its fair share of tempting shops. Quality Canadian made athletic wear can be found at Lululemon and Lolë (women’s fashion only). Score leather goods at Roots or pick up an iconic striped blanket from Hudson Bay Company. The Spirit of Christmas, is Canada’s largest year-round Christmas store, where you’re sure to snag a souvenir (ornaments can be personalized for free!).

Grab a Bite
Replenish lost calories at Wild Flour, an artisanal bakery that serves up hot soup, fresh sandwiches and hearty salads. Vegans and gluten-free diners are spoiled for choice, and you won’t want to leave without snagging a brownie for later, just in case…

Dive In
Glacier-fed turquoise lakes lace the landscape surrounding Banff townsite. You can rent kayaks and canoes at picturesque Moraine Lake, set smack-dab in the Valley of the Ten Peaks and Lake Vermillion is a sublime spot to view wildlife. Lake Minnewanka is the only spot in Banff National Park where motorized boats are allowed. Rentals are available by the hour or half day.

Spa Sanctuary
One of North America’s most famous spas lies within the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. At Willow Stream Spa, European-style Kur mineral baths soothe sore muscles, while invigorating waterfalls and alpine inspired treatments rejuvenate spa-goers. ~Photo Credit: Fairmont Banff Springs
Dine à la Canadiana
It doesn’t get more kitschy Canadian than at Park Distillery, the first distillery inside a National Park. Inspired by campfire cuisine, this restaurant bar dishes out creative riffs based on the great outdoors. The prime rib burger is one big meaty mouthful and wood fired sides from broccoli to flatbread are perfect for sharing. You can’t ignore their house-made spirits, so budget time to take a complimentary distillery tour (daily at 3:30 p.m.). ~Photo Credit: Banff Lake Louise Tourism / Paul Zizka Photography
Wildlife Safari
Banff National Park is home to an abundance of wildlife, but there’s so many more species than the elk and deer that strut around town. Early evening is when the critters are most active, but unless you’re a local, it can be hard knowing prime viewing spots. The solution? Take a wildlife tour, where you’ll get an up close and personal look at the animals that call this part of the world home. Bring your camera as you’ll journey through a variety of scenic landscapes while learning about the animals and their habitat from certified guides. Photo Credit: Jeff Mitchell Photography
Sunset Capture
Banff is brimming with Instagram-worthy spots to shoot an epic sunset with the mountain backdrop. The best vantage point could very well be at Vermillion Lake, but Mount Norquay also has several options to capture the Banff townsite and the Rundle Mountain range. ~Photo Credit: Banff Lake Louise Tourism / Paul Zizka Photography
