WORDS BY ALISON JONES | JANUARY 16, 2018

As a man who’s featured in 18 TGR films in the last 15 years, it’s not an overstatement to describe Sage as a legend of skiing. His tenure chasing unfathomable lines and pushing physics has led him to truly carve the shape of freeskiing since the very start.

Known for going big in the backcountry, Sage brings his talents to CMH this winter with a 5-Day trip at CMH Kootenay in February 2018, so we took 5 minutes to ask 5 questions.

1/What’s been your proudest moment in your career, to date?
There are some standout moments for sure, certain lines in BC and Alaska that were especially challenging, exciting, and basically, puzzles that needed to be figured out just to make it down. Those moments have brought several proud moments that were possible because of the crew dynamic working together, and the terrain that was coated with the right snow conditions.  I think the thing I am most proud of really is the life experience I have created. To be able to express myself, explore the world, inspire others, and live a life based on something I love to do is something I take great pride in.

2/Do you have any advice on physically prepping for the ski season?
For me, up until this year, my conditioning has really been all about just doing the activity you want to do.  I go to the ski hill, ski lots of laps, slowly get stronger and tuned up for skiing. It’s worked pretty well, but since skiing is such a “technique”, vs. a “fitness” activity, it’s easy to get complacent with the bare minimum of full body conditioning.  After injuring my Achilles last winter, I started rehab in the spring and realized that my overall body could use a little more conditioning to be stronger and more balanced overall.  Coming into this season, I felt in better shape than ever, and have been doing pretty simple core, and full body conditioning that is all about using your own body weight. Activities like CrossFit, have great conditioning elements, but at a certain point you’re just training for CrossFit, so it’s all about a balance.

3/Aside from skiing with CMH this winter, what else is on the books for you this season?
At this point, my plans are still up in the air. I have a few filming projects that I will be embarking on, but until winter starts shaping up I don’t like to plan too far in advance. I live in Bend Oregon, so the early part of the year I will be spent getting my ski legs at Mt. Bachelor ski area and skiing backcountry around the area.

4/What are your words of stoke to anyone looking forward to sampling backcountry BC Heli-Skiing this season?
Skiing in BC is kind of just the best. After traveling the world my favorite place remains, Canada. And if you have the opportunity to get in a Helicopter then you’re pretty much guaranteed the goods! In BC, there is amazing terrain both in alpine, and subalpine zones, this creates phenomenal skiing no matter what the weather brings.

5/What would you like people to come away with from skiing with you in February?
I’m a harbinger of stoke, if you hang with me, it’s all about the experience, and it’s going to be good no matter what.
